Before calling up an editor at a magazine or newspaper (and it really is as easy as Ben says it is) -- have well thought out answers to these three questions:1) What is your point? Please do have a point. And answer this in one concise sentence. Do not go on and on. Editors do not have time.
2) Why does it matter to their audience? This is a deceptively simple question. You have to know their audience and fit the answer to THEIR audience. Many give me these answers to this question: Because it's cool. Because the public NEEDS to know. Because it matters, that's why. Sadly none of these will fly. Really dig into why their audience would give a damn. The only way to find that out is to understand the needs/wants of that audience.
3) Why does it matter NOW? There is always a news peg that needs to be hit. A temporal component is necessary for all mainstream pubs. This is another deceptively simple question. Be careful -- find a peg. You can fake it with these options: There's a relevant conference or anniversary coming up; Someone is about to publish a book on the topic; There's a movie coming out; There's a planned public event around the topic.
If you hit those three questions with terrific answers you will be successful. I can practically guarantee it. If you are not, it's because the answers were not sufficient. Have fun!
